Some "Sound" Advice for Acoustic Leak Detection

Utility Services Associates very own Rob Meston giving some "sound" advice when it comes to acoustic leak detection. Great article in Technology Perspectives on the different leak sounds accompanied by different access points and what contact points are best for acoustic leak detection.

Unaccounted for Water and the Value of Leak Detection

One of the most important tasks is fixing leaks that can disrupt or reduce the pressure of water reaching your home or business. Sometimes these leaks are small like a running toilet or pinhole leak in a water line and won’t disrupt the supply. Others are large and can often lead to large sinkholes, significant water losses, and the disruption of service. These large leaks often surface quickly or are identified by service disruption and are fixed quickly. While small leaks might not seem important, over time they grow to be large leaks and cause significant damage if not fixed.

Water Tank Inspection and Cleaning

  • Pre-Maintenance Inspections

  • Rehabilitation Consulting

  • Tank Management Programs

Water Storage Tanks and reservoirs represent a major investment for utilities as well as a critical operational and water quality component to distribution systems. Utility Services, in partnership with Midco Diving and Marine Services, Inc., offers utilities the option to inspect and clean tanks without costly down time.

Our water tank diving services in cleaning, inspection, maintenance, and repair hit upon all of the following structures within the system, including:

  • Raw Water Intake

  • Trash Rack

  • Tank – NFPA 25 6-2.4 Tank Inspections

  • Traveling Water Screen

  • Air Burst and Chemical Systems

  • Valve and Gate

  • Leak Detection and Repair

  • Clearwell

  • Coating

  • Baffle Wall Curtain

Unsafe drinking water can have disastrous consequences. Therefore, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sets standards for tap and public water systems in the United States under the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA).

As far as maintenance goes, our tank cleaning services are an indispensable component to keeping your potable water system safe and operative. Whether it is an on-grade, below grade, clearwell, pedestal, standpipe, or tower, Midco’s tank cleaning divers and equipment, used solely in potable water storage systems, will remove sand, sediment, flocculated material, lime and silt from your storage system. All tank cleaning services can be performed while your system is full and operating in a normal manner, eliminating downtime and loss of storage capacity.

Tank cleaning divers wear industry standardized suits, so at no time does the body come in contact with the stored water. For added safety, divers are treated with State and American Water Works Association (AWWA) compliant chlorine solutions before entering the tank.

The cleaning of potable water tanks and towers is a very important health and safety precaution that is often overlooked. Much public drinking water leaves these tanks and towers and travels directly to the tap—hence, the imperative for tank cleaning services to prevent the transfer of pathogens, waterborne illness, or contaminating poisons, such as high concentrations of fluoride.

Utility Services heartily recommends Midco Diving & Marine Services, Inc. for your inspection, maintenance, repair, and tank cleaning services.
